Top 10 Historical Sites to Visit

1: Ephesus

In its prime, Ephesus was the second largest city of the Roman Empire. Even though times have moved on, you can still take a walk around the site and imagine what life was like for Christians under Roman occupation. Marvel at the large ampitheatre, visit the public latrines and see the houses that occupied the streets of Roman towns. Ephesus is only 15 km. away from Selcuk. (photo by LynnC 1953

4: Apollon Temple

The Apollon Temple is the perfect place to visit if you are holidaying in the resort of Altinkum. 5: Pergamon

Located in the Izmir region, Pergamon is definitely going to impress you. Your camera will be snapping away as you take pictures of the theater that used to seat 10,000 people. There is also the temple of Tarjan, the Acropolis and the Red Basilica. A full day, if not more is needed to properly explore this area.

6: Cave of the Seven Sleepers

The Cave of the Seven Sleepers is located close to Ephesus and the Virgin Mary’s house. The story goes that seven Christian boys were hiding in this cave from the Romans. They fell asleep and woke up 200 years later. This story is not a local myth as it is mentioned in both the Christian and Muslim holy books (photo by mebooyou)

7: Virgin Mary’s House

The Virgin Mary’s House is located high in the hills of Selcuk however you can reach there on guided tours. It is said to be the last resting place of the Virgin Mary so don’t be surprised to see a nun or priest walking around. Local myths say that there are three water fountains to drink from and each one resembles a different aspect of life; fertility, good health or wealth. Which one will you end up drinking? Bodrum castle is one of our favorite places simply because of the amazing views. It is also known as the castle of St.Peter and dates back to 1402. While you are visiting the castle, also take time out to see the Museum of Underwater Archaeology which is right next door! (photo by fufu)

9. Hierapolis

Hierapolis is a world heritage site located in Denizli. If you find yourself visiting the natural beauty of Pamukkale, take the slight detour to make this ancient site part of your day. 10. Aphrodisias

Even though this ancient site is still partly undiscovered, it is well worth a visit. The city earned its name from the goddess of love called Aphrodite and it is located close to the town of Nazilli just 45 km. from Aydin. Amazingly this site was relatively unknown until the 1960’s when an American professor started working to uncover the secrets of life in this city that lay deep under the earth.
