Mesir is a gum paste that is believed to have healing qualities and every year, in the city of Manisa they celebrate with days of traditions. Locals will take holidays and much emphasis is placed on having fun.
There are many beliefs about how Mesir can into existence however the most popular is that the wife of the Ottoman Sultan Yavuz Sultan Selim and the mother of Kanuni Sultan Süleyman, known as Süleyman the Magnificent, Hafsa Sultan became ill while she was in Manisa.
No cures were found so the head of the local Mosque prepared a paste mixture which consisted of herbs and spices. The treatment worked and after public demand, it was wrapped in paper and tossed from the doom and the minarets of Sultan Mosque. This is how the Manisa Mesir Festival was born.
