![]() Canico OverviewCaniço is one of those places you have got to see to believe. The setting is breath-taking, the views amazing and just getting there is an adventure. It is actually built within the cliffs and hovers above a picturesque cove. You get there by taking an elevator from the cliff tops down through the rocks and out onto sea level. Fantastic!
Located within the Prainha complex, near to the charming Algarve resort of Alvor, Caniço is worth visiting not only for the setting but also for the food. This is not your basic beach bar fare. The cuisine is Mediterranean with plenty of algarvean influence. You can sample some very traditional Portuguese dishes here. There are several fish and seafood dishes using the best of the local catch, prawns feature strongly, there are inventive salads as well as a good selection of meat dishes. The menu is complemented by an extensive wine list. The food served at Caniço is of a consistently high standard and fits perfectly with the surroundings. The walls of the upper restaurant terrace are the actual cliffs and every table in the restaurant has an unbeatable sea view!
Caniço is open from 10 in the morning to the early hours of the next morning. Snacks and refreshing drinks are served all day as well as the à la carte menu for both lunch and dinner. At night Caniço has a special magic. The cliffs are back-lit, the DJ sets up on the sand (tide permitting) and the party begins. During the summer season Caniço hosts plenty of live music and party nights. Just imagine yourself having enjoyed a lovely meal, then dancing under the stars on the fine sand with a delicious cocktail in your hand. That’s hard to beat!
The beach which Caniço overlooks is gorgeous. A small cove beach, (very small at high tide!) the water is translucent, there are small caves and arches carved out of the cliffs and a series of interconnecting coves which just call out to be explored. Caniço is one of those places that once you visit you’ll want to boast to all your friends about it.

June 2009 Amazing food, service and atmosphere.

The food is fantastic. My partner had the pork and clams which was the best dish he's ever tasted (he's very fussy); he would have licked the plate clean!! I had the fish rice which had a fantastic selection of fish and tasted so fresh. The portion was so much that I couldn't eat it all. Our meal was made all the more fantastic by the friendly and efficient service; the beautiful views; and relaxing music. We returned again the next day and had some drinks sitting on the bar level then went to the beach for a swim. Stick to the local beer and wine for drinks as the spirits are more expensive (same as all the others places in Alvor that we went to). A definate must if you are in Alvor.
