Our Locals' Tip: If you want to be adventurous, have a bit of everything, a la carte. Don't forget to include the three essentials; sushi, sashimi with soy sauce and teppan-yaki (Japanese BBQ) on your plate.
Situated in the centre of Amsterdam, the Kobe House - Tepanyaki and Sushi Bar is the place to go if you are in the mood for some authentic Japanese cuisine.
As soon as you enter, you will realise that the Japanese ethics of cleanliness and efficiency are alive and kicking in the restaurant. The decor is warm, colourful and has a friendly appeal. Although Kobe House is known best for their sushi and sashimi, they also have a fine teppan menu which is cooked right in front of the guests by their own personal chef.
Inside Kobe House
With a classic East-meets-West design, Kobe House has a spotless interior, blended with Oriental designs. The exterior affords no pretence at ostentatious display; just the name of the restaurant and reflector windows. As you step inside, a variety of sashimi, sushi and teppan-yaki dishes greet you from the main display.
Behind the chef's counter, you can see hundreds of bottles containing different sauces and syrups, many of which are used to adorn any meal you care to order. The servers and chefs are dressed in traditional Japanese kimonos, which are simply yet elegantly embroidered. The entire place exudes an appeal of tradition, vitality and efficiency.
On The Menu
Moving on to the menu, if you're a tourist without much experience on Japanese cuisine, it's probably best to go for the set meals, such as the 'Meal for Two' or the 'Sakura menu'. Don't hesitate to inquire with the chef on what he recommends.
As mentioned earlier, every guest at Kobe House has a personal chef who prepares their meals right in front of them. The swift handiwork of the chef, along with the pleasure and reassurance of getting to see fresh ingredients being used to prepare a toothsome meal is one of the highlights of the Kobe House experience.
