Our Locals' Tip: While there are not many chances of you bumping into any vehicles, since traffic is not allowed into Kalverstraat, the only thing you would need to keep an eye out for would be human traffic especially on the weekends and on Thursday evening when it gets really too busy here.

The street starts at Dam Square and concludes next to the Munttoren tower. History of Kalverstraat
Kalverstraat’s dates back 600 years, when it was first established as a calves market. It used to be the centre for livestock trading and people would go there to buy cows and oxen. However, six centuries later the street does not have anything that would help you trace it back to its cattle trading days.
Best time to visit Kalverstraat
It is advisable to visit Kalverstraat during regular shop opening hours which are 9:00/10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Monday to Friday; 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturdays; and 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sundays. Thursdays is shopping evening in Amsterdam with shops staying open until 9.00 p.m.
