Prostitution Information Centre
How to get there
The PIC is quite easy to get to. Located along the Damrak, one can simply come from the Centraal Station side and walk towards the Dam Square. When you reach the Beurs Van Berlage, just turn left towards the Oude Brugsteeg, walk a little more and turn right to the second street; you will reach a small street to your left. Congrats, you have reached Enge Kerksteeg, which is the place where PIC is located. Ironically, it is situated near the famous Old Church, so you have that as a landmark to look out for.

Our Locals' Tip: On Saturday's PIC officials also take tourists on a walk to explain how things work around this kind of neighborhood. Most come out of the experience feeling enlightened. The PIC also has some good books about the Red Light District available.
Amsterdam, as most people know, is the place where there is a relaxed attitude towards issues, which are banned under almost every other nation. Prostitution has been an inherent element in the free-thinking, liberal society of Amsterdam and continues to do so. However, with the growing curiosity of tourists and customers about what prostitution entails and the life of a prostitute, the Prostitute Information Centre was opened.
What is the Prostitution Information Centre all about?
The Prostitute Information Centre, or PIC, was opened in 1994, by Mariska Marjoor, a former prostitute herself. She felt the need to educate people about the story behind prostitution and why women decide to become one. She also felt it was her mission to clear the misrepresentations and misunderstandings that exist due to inaccuracy in information regarding this profession. Keeping this in mind, she founded PIC, which now operates as a predominantly charitable organisation, providing mostly free advice and information to curious visitors. Any question is answered, all doubts are cleared, and all suggestions are also sought. With a visitor strength of around 22,000 each year, PIC continues to grow as one of the world's leading information centers regarding the 'behind-closed-doors' issue of prostitution.
PIC comprises of former sex workers and individuals who have done considerable research on the field. They are able to give detailed explanations about how and why girls decide to take up this profession. This is in stark contrast to other countries, where prostitution is criminalized and prostitutes are treated as the pariahs of society. In Amsterdam, it is a perfectly acceptable decision to take up prostitution, and is done so with valid reasons.
