Torture Museum

Amsterdam

Tourist Attractions

The Torture Museum has been designed so as to retain the dark, dreary feel that was present in medieval torture cells around 500 years ago. It serves its purpose well, scaring the wits out of innocent tourists by exhibiting some of the most gruesome torture tools and apparatus ever invented in the medieval age.

What To Do at the Torture Museum

Step inside and it feels like you've been transported centuries back through time. With a combination of shady lighting effects, gaudy paints and rusty torture racks and guillotines, the Torture Museum more than justifies its claim of being able to scare the hell out of you. It really does a great job in illustrating to tourists how the criminal justice system used to punish the condemned back in the 1400-1500's. One can almost feel the pain of those wretched prisoners who are being subjected to the most painful tortures a body can experience.

Also, in the medieval ages, being decapitated by a guillotine was widely considered to be the most lenient and painless form of punishment, so much so that it was usually reserved for the aristocracy or noblemen. Considering the horror that picture evokes for us, one can only imagine the terrors that were reserved for the lesser mortals in those days. The Torture Museum gives an accurate, albeit terrifying depiction of those times.
