Friday Night Skate Overview

Friday Night Skate is a free-for-all event, as a skating tour throughout Amsterdam. This event is held every Friday, unless the streets are wet, and is open to all, provided certain conditions are met.

What is the Friday Night Skate all about?

The Friday Night Skate Tour is quite a popular pastime in Amsterdam. Every Friday, loads of people converge together with their skates and take a group tour of Amsterdam, spanning around 20km. For the benefit of those who have done it earlier, the skate route varies every Friday to keep things interesting. It’s really quite an exhilarating experience to zoom down the ultra-smooth asphalt roads, seeing the sights as you go. For safety purposes, the roads are usually blocked to avoid accidents from oncoming traffic. Additionally, there’s a medical crew skating along to help with first aid purposes, in case someone gets injured while skating. You can go along with your friends on the Friday night Skate and feel the thrill of riding with the pack as you tear down the roads of Amsterdam. It’s truly an enjoyable experience provided you meet the regulations of the organisation.

Friday Night Skate Conditions

That brings us to the aforementioned conditions. You will be eligible to participate in the Friday Night Skate only if you have the ability to brake well, and keep up with the group. If you aren’t able to maintain the pace of the group, you will be asked to leave the tour and practice more until you are fit to join the tour. If you meet all these conditions, you are all set to go. As for the skates themselves, you can rent those at the shops in Vondel Park and nearby areas if you don’t have your own skates with you. Also, the organisation does not take any responsibility for any injuries sustained during the Friday Night Skate, so it’s advised to bring good protection gear along.

Friday Night Skate start time

Friday Night Skate requires no charge. It is held every Friday at 20.00 hrs. The Friday Night Skate starting point is right in front of the former Eye Film Institute near the start of the main park area coming from Leidseplein.
