The New Zealand Maritime Museum at the heart of Auckland's waterfront takes visitors on a journey through New Zealand's maritime heritage.

The museum's seven exhibition galleries tell the stories of the first Polynesian visitors, reveal the difficulties experienced by European settlers, explore the background of the country's modern sailing masters and celebrate New Zealanders' love of the water. The Edmiston Gallery hosts a series of changing exhibitions including maritime related artwork, ship figureheads, and scrimshaw.

For The Kids:

The Museum has some great interactive features including the chance to design a yacht, weather a storm in the rocking cabin, and relax in a typical Kiwi holiday home (Bach), making it a great destination for families. Children will also enjoy the adventure trails and the special activities during school holidays.

Sailing Experience:

Extend your experience to the water by booking a sailing trip around Auckland harbour on one of the Museum's boats. The Museum's fully-restored heritage scow Ted Ashby sets sail six days a week, taking visitors on a thrilling one hour voyage on the sparkling water of Waitemata Harbour. Among the other vessels operated by the Museum are the Breeze, a square-rigged brigantine and traditional wooden sailing ship. Along with sailings around the harbour, visitors can book a full day trip around the Hauraki Gulf. Book a sailing trip.

Venue Hire:

With a prime location in Viaduct Harbour, the Museum offers an ideal location for parties or business functions. The venue includes the spacious Maritime Room and the smaller Boardroom. The Museum's in-house catering company can create a menu to suit any type of function. Exclusive gallery viewings can be arranged as a part of a function as well as chartered sailings on one of the Museum's vessels.

Opening Times:

The attraction is open every day from 10.00 am - 4.00 pm daily. Final public admissions are at 4.00pm each day. Allow two hours for a visit to the Museum with additional time added for sailings.
