Sail Komodo 2013 (27 Jul 2013 - 14 Sep 2013)
From 27 Jul 2013 To 14 Sep 2013
Sail Komodo 2013
The Sail Komodo 2013 Yacht Race and Rally to Indonesia's East Nusa Tenggara islands east of Bali and Lombok, from Darwin, Australia has been allocated more than Rp 11 billion (US$1.1 million) by the central government of Indonesia.
East Nusa Tenggara Tourism and Creative Economy Regional Chief Abraham Klakik said recently that the money was taken from the budget for the National Programme for Village Community Empowerment (PNPM Mandiri).
He said that about 130 yachts had registered to participate in the Sail Komodo event, expected to bring major revenue into Indonesian islands on the route.
So important is the event for Indonesia that President S.B. Yudhoyonu and Vice-President Boediono will both be involved in meeting the yachtsmen when they arrive in Indonesian waters.
It is hoped that the number of participants will continue to increase as there is still time to register.
The Sail Komodo 2013 participants will depart from Darwin, North Australia on July 27 for Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara. They will arrive in Kupang on July 29 and stay here for a couple of days before the event is officially inaugurated at Kupang Beach, on August 4.
The participants are scheduled to visit a number of local tourist destinations in Timor Island before officially sailing off to all Regencies in the Province.
The Sail Komodo 2013 participants are expected to arrive back in Labuan Bajo by 9th September and the event will officially close on 14th September.
Labuan Bajo, the town on the western side of the island of Flores, which is the departure point for visits to the Komodo National Park, has engineers and builders busy with the expansion of its Labuan Bajo Komodo Airport and terminal building. When completed in early September 2013, Komodo Airport will have a 2,150 meter long runway that will be able to accommodate the larger jets like Boeing 737s, said Pak Fuadani, Head of the Labuan Bajo airport.
