It often seems to follow that the higher you go the more you pay but the beautiful urban views and exciting atmosphere make at least one or two drinks worthwhile. If you really want to sit up above one of the best cities in the world for longer you might decide to splash out on dinner at the same time too.

Perhaps the most renowned of the sky bars is one of the world’s highest open air bars at the Lebua at State Tower, a luxury hotel right next to the river. If a bar could be an A list celebrity Sirocco restaurant and the amazing Sky Bar which seems to jut out into the sky is it. When you arrive at the top of some sweeping outdoor steps above the restaurant and bar you feel as if you’re making a grand entrance and walking through the air as you glide down. You can walk round the illuminated circular bar filled with smart looking cocktail waiters, and stand by the see-through walls for a unique view of the city from 63 floors up.

Back through to the inside and out the other side on the same floor is a more chilled-out sky bar feel with leather banquette bed style seating where you can recline and lounge with a cocktail nibbling on an olive and looking wistfully out at the panoramic views just beyond your seat.

Chic, exuding class and with an air of sophisticated cool is the Banyan Tree, another 5-star hotel with Vertigo Grill and Moon Bar, an al fresco restaurant and sky bar on the 61st floor. Panoramic views of the city stretch out on all sides with block banquette seating for chilled-out sipping and tables and chairs right up to the edge to give you your own personal view of the expanse of urban landscape. The restaurant has white table-clothed tables and covered white chairs separated into different areas so that you have enough space to people-watch, and take in the views whilst still being enjoying an intimate meal out. This is definitely a special occasion sky bar which feels luxurious and refined.

The Red Sky Bar at the Centara Grand at CentralWorld has a futuristic, modern feel with the outdoor terrace wrapping right the way round to give 360° vistas right in the heart of the city. A live jazz band plays every night and the menu is upscale bistro fare. With hundreds of wines on the menu this 55th floor the chic urban setting is trendy and relaxed, and the curved sofa seating around the edge makes Red Sky the type of sky bar you could definitely chill-out for more than a drink or two.

A revolving roof deck 84 floors up and a sky bar on the 83rd floor, the Baiyoke Sky Hotel is Thailand’s highest hotel and at over 300 metres it is one of the tallest in the world. It has been a Bangkok landmark for many years and the bar has a retro feel with seats right by the big floor to ceiling windows. It is perhaps less on-trend than some of the newer, swankier sky bars but with an observation deck and several sky-high restaurants it really was the first to really show off the vibrant life of Bangkok at night.

Long Table is a dark, deeply fashionable and inviting bar and restaurant with a supermodel style designer quality and huge holiday appeal for its perfectly poised smart casual, relaxed and celebratory ambience. The dark al fresco bar terrace area looks into the indoor restaurant with its 25 metre long table for gourmet diners, and also serves snacks and full meals on low tables with big leather seats and chic leather sofas. Waiters come to the table with handy pocket torches and the dark surroundings give Long Table an intimate ambience. Here on the 25th floor you are just above the rooftops and being so near and yet so far from the Bangkok views you really feel part of the city, as if you are nestled at the height of it rather than so high up you’re detached from it.

Bangkok’s top sky bars really do deliver a magical bar experience and have a red carpet appeal that makes you feel special, cherished and in the mood to chink glasses and celebrate. Being able to sip a cocktail on a balmy evening with the whole of Bangkok at your feet and the most amazing views of the city really shows off the charisma and cosmopolitan culture of the capital of Thailand.
