Welcome to the newest from of Urban Barcelona Transport… Bicing! If you are a tourist or are only in town for a short while, this service is not right for you. It is designed for those people lucky enough to call Barcelona home. Yet although Bicing is not accessible to you, there are other ways to rent a bicycle!

Bicing is a new idea which shares the format of similar systems in major cities around the world. Indeed Helsinki, Washington DC, Stockholm, London, Bixi and Paris all operate a service like this to name just a handful of examples.

The concept:

You can use an automated system to withdraw a bicycle from one of hundreds of ‘Bicing Stations’ around the city. When you have carried out your journey, simply return it to the closest Bicing Station! This is the perfect way to execute a short trip around the city, especially in the summer months when the Metro is stuffy and hot!

If you are a permanent Barcelona resident, student or simply staying here for a few months, Bicing is definitely worth considering! Many of the Bicing stations are located next to public parking, Metro and FGC stations which allows you to combine your journey and go where you want, whenever you want!

The service operates 365 days a year and you can take a bicycle at any time between 05:00 and 00:00 Monday through Thursday. After this time you may only return bicycles. On Fridays, Saturdays and Public Holidays the Bicing service is in operation 24 hours!

Growth of Bicing:

March 22, 2007: 200 bicycles and 14 stations.
May 1, 2007: 750 bicycles and 50 stations.
July 1, 2007: 1,500 bicycles and 100 stations.

May 1, 2009: 6,000 bicycles and 401 stations.

Things to remember:

Follow the rules and guidelines put in place by Bicing: They are there to protect you.
Do not ride a bicycle whilst intoxicated. It is dangerous and illegal!
