| July 7, 2012

Golfing holidays are rapidly growing in popularity, with plaid-clad players swapping skis or swimming pools for a set of clubs and jetting off in search of a course on par with paradise. They need look no further than golf in Galicia; with wall-to-wall blue skies and a course for everyone from the nimble novice to a future Mcilroy, you’re guaranteed the round of your life on a Galicia golf course. We’ve condensed the whole into one to provide a guide to Galicia golf at all levels of the game.

For Families

Mundo Maya Minigolf
If a 9-iron is taller than your youngest family member, mini golf might be the answer. Forget swinging too hard and stick with the family for this Mayan-themed crazy golf course that pits you against crumbling walls, ancient landmarks, and the vengeful Gods of a lost civilisation. For those in a hurry to reach other Galicia attractions the course only takes around 45 minutes to complete, though you might find yourself playing again to beat your score! Visit on the weekend after 9pm for fun with the lights out, the course lit up by psychedelic black-light, lasers, and fluorescent decorations. Just don’t be too upset when the kids beat you!

For Beginners

Barbanza (Boiro) Golf
If crazy golf’s not your bag but you’re not ready for the big one, pitch & putt is a good compromise. Featuring 18 shorter holes with a par of 54, Barbanza offers a decent challenge to the budding beginner. Play against a rustic backdrop of lavish greenery, tranquil lakes, and an old stone church; this is a great course to bask in the glorious Galicia weather. Can you stuff it in the hole under par?

For Mid-Level Players

Hercules Golf Club
This course more than lives up to its heroic name, with 9 full-size holes featuring bloodcurdling bunkers, wicked water hazards, and bristling bush. Hercules is the ideal course to get some action on full-length holes without needing to conquer a daunting 18 of them (although the course is in the process of expanding). You can also practice on the club’s small pitch & putt course and driving range, or take lessons to really improve your game. Although a generally flat course, there are plenty of curves, hillocks, and other stunning Galicia scenery to inspire you to pop a birdie or two.

For the Budding Pro

Meis Golf Club
Now you’re ready for the big game! Don your brightest plaid, polish your balls, and hit the links for top-class swinging! On the white tees this course stretches a whopping 6263 metres with a challenging par of 72, though those with a severe handicap can slouch to the shorter red tees instead. It’s a long course, featuring wide fairways and tough water hazards, so your balls are bound to get wet or encounter a spot of rough. Delving after your shot in thick bush will give you plenty of time to relieve the stress, though after a few treks into the rough you might suspect that someone saw you coming. Whatever the result, head back to the clubhouse to clean up, get a refreshing drink, and spend a stint in the sauna. You earned it.
