| July 29, 2012

Family travel is all too often synonymous with keeping the kids happy at the expense of your own interests. Of course they should enjoy themselves, but it’s your holiday too! In the Algarve, family activities are geared toward every member of your clan, so you can enjoy all its marvels without the tears or tantrums. Here are five top things to do in the Algarve to puts smiles on everyone’s face.

Where to stay

You’ll never be left wanting for luxury hotels in the Algarve. Usually though, the kids won’t be won over by the bells and whistles. Instead, why not sample a different side of Algarve accommodation and go camping. Bear with me. This is more than a stuffy tent that blows over in the night. There are numerous campsites in the Algarve, many offering luxury tents with multiple compartments, mobile homes, and cosy bungalows. The kids will love the sense of adventure, and you’ll feel closer to your family than ever before.

Hit the beach

For many, the golden sands are the very best Algarve attractions. No less than 74 Algarve beaches have been awarded a Blue Flag for water quality, cleanliness, and safety. So you needn’t worry about the kids running off to swim while you bask in the glorious Algarve weather. This is truly what holidays are all about. Just make sure everyone gets a good coating of sun cream!

Where to eat

Food can often be a tricky issue; you want to take the opportunity to indulge (holiday calories don’t count) while the kids can be more steadfast about their usual tastes. Beach restaurants in the Algarve are a perfect compromise, and sticking near the shore can keep everyone happy; the menus cater for all ages and palates, and once the plates are licked clean the younger members can return to their sandcastles while you enjoy a hard-earned coffee or cocktail (or both).

See the countryside

To some, a walk in the country can be a little dull. The lush rural areas of the Algarve are often overlooked in favour of the paradisiacal beaches. You might change your allegiance when the greenery’s whipping past you at high speed. Jeep Safari tours take you off-roading through the Algarve countryside to see the bountiful flora and fauna at a pace that’s bound to get everyone’s blood pumping.

Algarve swimming with Dolphins

Meet the locals

There’s one dream shared by people of all ages: to swim with dolphins. Whether aged 8 or 80, this never fails to be a magical experience. See them in their natural habitat on a boat tour along the stunning Algarve coastline, or get up close and personal at the Algarve’s world-class water parks. This is one shared memory your family will never forget.

His favourite trip so far was a 2-week stay at Disney World Florida, a fact he probably shouldn’t mention in the company of travel writers.
