They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but even that’s not enough to convey the superlative beauty of Iceland. I arrived in Reykjavik expecting to find a country as staggering as Scotland or New Zealand, but found something very different, a land that is utterly unique and totally beyond compare. Many of the landscapes I saw were hauntingly stark, possibly even barren, but this merely elevated the island to a work of exquisite minimalist art.
Even when the notoriously capricious weather in Reykjavik takes a turn for the worse, it serves only to make the surrounding vistas seem more dramatic, which brings it somewhat close to a photographer’s wildest dream. Perhaps the best way to survey the scenery is on a road trip, but there are also plenty of excursions that leave from the city which give an equally sublime overview.
The following photos are an attempt to capture what it is that makes this such a spectacular country, but there’s no substitute for jumping on a plane and seeing these views through your own eyes.
