Gumbet
Gumbet was in the past, a small and sleepy fishing village however the last twenty years has seen it grow to be a favourite holiday destination for many nationalities. It is now known as a lively hot spot on the Aegean coast of Turkey and is fast building a reputation for vibrant nightlife and exciting water sports.
Sun worshippers consider Gumbet to be a mecca and the long, sandy beach is the centre of activity during the day. The small resort has built a solid name on being able to satisfy everyone with the colourful and varied range of bars, restaurants and shops.
How to Get To Gumbet
Gumbet is the direct neighbour of Bodrum town centre. It can be reached by catching a local bus (called a dolmus) from Bodrum and the journey time is approximately 10 minutes. Due to the close distance, taxi fares are also cheap. From Bodrum airport, Gumbet can be reached by following the D330 south (Bodrum – Mugla highway). The distance is 40 km and this is a short transfer time of just an hour.
Hotels
A majority of hotels in Gumbet are middle of the range and operate on a bed and breakfast basis. This is due to the large selection of restaurants that serve food throughout the day. Things to do
• Head to the sandy beach and jump on the banana boat rides, which are great for kids
• The local market is on Sunday and this is your chance to barter and haggle for bargains
• Bodrum Castle, otherwise known as St Peters castle should be visited for the amazing views.
• The Museum of Underwater Archaeology has many impressive artefacts from the past.
• Lining the streets of Gumbet are fantastic shops selling well-priced clothes, handbags and shoes.
• Gumbet is also well known for water sports so try your hand at windsurfing and parasailing.
• The surrounding resort of Bitez is perfect for a family day out exploring.
• Take the kids for a thrilling and splashing day out at the Dedeman Aqua park.
• If you get fed up of life on the beach, jump on one of the daily boat tours that cruise the coastline.
Eating Out
Every tasty cuisine that you can imagine will be found in Gumbet, hot curries and Indian food, spicy Chinese, sizzling Mexican, Basic English or traditional Turkish. If you like to eat while you are on the go, simply head to the Burger King or McDonalds. Fish and seafood lovers should head down to the beachfront where the impressive restaurants specialize in serving freshly caught fish that will be cooked to perfection and delivered to your table with a crispy salad. To complete that holiday experience, sample the fish with a glass of the national Turkish drink called Raki.
Nightlife
Gumbet is well known for being a holy mecca to hard core party goers. Relax in good company in one of the traditional bars playing live music. Alternatively, show off your talent at the karaoke bars. Family bars will get everyone involved in old fashioned party games and a short taxi ride away, are the well-known clubs and bars of Bodrum Bars street. If you really want to party all night, head to bar street which is lined door to door with fantastic bars, so you won’t have to walk very far!
Weather
The weather is a Mediterranean climate and there is generally very little rainfall in the summer season which runs from April to October. The temperatures are highest in July and August when they can reach the high 30’s. Outside of the summer months, the weather is not suitable for sunbathing however you can still explore. December to February is when the greatest rainfall will occur.
Property
Gumbet has become a popular destination for property sales and long term rentals. The cost of living is cheap when comparing it to western countries. Properties vary from one bedroom apartments to six bedroom villas on enclosed complexes. Due to the close proximity of Gumbet to the centre of Bodrum, property prices are a little higher when comparing them with other resorts in Turkey but the benefit is that everything is on your doorstep and owning a car is not necessary.
