Wine Regions Information

The exquisite city of Bordeaux is the heart of the Bordeaux wine regions. A business and cultural centre for wine, it is surrounded by the world’s most famous wine country such as Medoc, Graves, Côtes de Bordeaux, St. Emilion, Pomerol and Entre-Deux-Mers.  Bordeaux is the largest AOC wine region in France encompassing 117,500 hectares and there are thousands of vineyards within minutes of Bordeaux and the Atlantic Ocean.  The production of 661 million bottles of this French elixir is exported to over 150 destination countries and accounts for revenue of over 3.37 billion euro.

Clinging to the Gironde estuary which leads into the Atlantic and the Garonne and Dordogne rivers, the wine areas of Bordeaux are split into left and right bank regions; a map of the regions shows Médoc and Graves on the left while Blaye, Bourg, Côte de Bordeaux, St. Emillion and Libourne on the right with Entre-Deux-Mers in the middle. Marked more by subtlety than power, the Bordeaux vineyards enjoy a mild climate which is greatly influenced by the warming effect of the Atlantic Gulf Stream. The majority of Bordeaux wines are red but there are exceptional whites such as Sauterne and Graves along with a lesser amount of rosé and sparkling Crémant.

Bordeaux red wines always improve when aged - some are great at four or five years but others may need many years to reach their peak. It’s a misconception that all Bordeaux wines are expensive - note the regions of Entre-Deux-Mers, Côtes de Bourg, Côtes de Blaye and Côte de Bordeaux in particular. You’ll be delighted to find exceptional price and value as you wend your way through the chateaux tastings of their signature nectars!  You will meet some wonderful Bordelaise growers who will be delighted to give you a tour, history and story of these noble grapes and best advice about aging the wines as well. Know that a "châteaux" is any home that produces wine. Enjoy the Bordeaux wine adventure and with over 9000 châteaux you are guaranteed to be on the brink of your own wine discovery!
