Berkeley Castle

Bristol

Attractions

The Berkeley family has inhabited Berkeley Castle, originally built as a Norman Fortress, since the late 12th century. A visit here will provide you with a rich insight into English history. Expert Guides bring the castle's history alive during visits to the Kings Gallery (where King Edward II was brutally murdered), the Tower Room, the Great Hall, formal rooms, domestic areas and more. You can even visit the Beer Cellar and catch the faint aroma of hops from the ancient beer barrels. Expect to see some stunning artwork, gleaming Georgian silver, beautiful porcelain, wonderful tapestries, fantastic armoury collections, Francis Drake's cabin chest, Queen Elizabeth I's bedspread and, of course, all the trappings of an old fashioned kitchen. You will also see features such as 'trip steps' designed to make intruders fall during an assault, arrow slits and murder holes.

The Gardens:

Take some time to enjoy the rare plants, shrubs and trees in the gardens that surround the castle. If you are visiting during the summer, especially in June, you will be rewarded by the heady scent of roses in the air. There is also a large Lily Pond originally built as a swimming pool.

Butterfly House:

Housing around 42 species of butterfly, many speciality plants and the Atlas Moth (the world's largest moth), the Butterfly House is a haven of peace and tranquility. At the height of the season scores of exotic, colourful butterflies flutter around this tropical oasis- creating a wonderful spectacle. Staff are on hand to answer any questions you may have about the butterflies and their life-cycle. You will find the Butterfly House in the walled kitchen garden beside Rose Garden Picnic Area

Morning Coffee, Lunch or Afternoon Tea is available in the Yurt Cafe in the walled garden.
