Madara Horseman

The Madara Horseman or Madara Rider (Madarski Konnik in Bulgarian) is an impressive relief carved in a massive rock some 23 meters above the ground. It is the only one of its kind in Europe and a key attraction in the Madara historical and archeological reserve, one of the biggest in Bulgaria. The Madara Horseman can be found 2 km from the village of Madara, 17 km northeast of Shumen and 75 km from Varna. The reserve is a protected area that features an abundance of ancient fossils, excavation sites and over 150 natural caves in the rocks that once were used as dwellings and later as monastic retreats, churches, chapels and gravesites. Saint Panteleymon for example is a still acting chapel which resides in one of the biggest caves. There are several pleasant trails and a good number of information boards and signs on the area of the reserve, you can hardly lose your way. Madara Horseman is accessible to people with disabilities. Working hours are 8:30 am till 5 pm in the winter and 8:30 am till 8 pm in the summer. Entrance fee is 4 leva, discounts apply for students and people with disabilities. A guided tour in English costs 10 leva. There is a parking lot, toilets and a gift shop at the entrance of the reserve.
The closest town of Shumen offers decent hotel accommodation and a good choice of restaurants and cafes. Much more options and tourist attractions (including a beautiful Black Sea beach) however, you will find in Varna.
