Paternoster Information

The name Paternoster comes from the Latin phrase Patre Nostre meaning "Our Father". According to local legend, this is the prayer the Portuguese sailors were uttering when their ship, The Lisboa, ran aground here on 23 October 1910.

Paternoster is a picturesque fishing village famous for its crayfish, friendly locals and many white-washed fishermen’s cottages along the white sandy beach. In spring, it is a good base for flower watchers, bird watching and generally a popular getaway for city dwellers who enjoy the relaxed pace and the delightful restaurants on offer.

This village lends itself to long walks on the beach, the freshest seafood at Paternoster restaurants, including the spectacular and ever-popular Voorstrandt restaurant, and relaxing with family and friends in the tranquil surroundings.
