Volkskombuis Overview

De Volkskombuis is a Stellenbosch Restaurant that is situated in the 120 year-old Cecil John Rhodes’s farm labourers cottages. Dawid and Christelle Kriel are second generation owners of this business , and with their exceptional team they have been delighting the palates of many travellers for many years.

What makes De Volkskombuis so interesting is their adaptability and their multi-faceted offering. Besides the charming main dining area of De Volkskombuis, they have a large room, Die Voorkamer, perfect for groups of 30 – 40 needing a conference venue or tour groups stopping for a taste of traditional Cape Cuisine.

In addition, De Oewer Riverside Food & Wine Garden is on the banks of the Eerste River, adjacent to De Volkskombuis. In the warmer summer months, you can enjoy lunch under the century old oak trees next to the river. For the more special occasion or private function, tailor-made breakfast-, banqueting- & barbeque menus are available. Red Pepper Deli, Volkskombuis’ catering division prepares delectable quiches and gourmet take-away dishes which are perfect for the caterer at home or at the office.

And their latest offering is Kardoesie. It offers a playground for kids, a perfect place for birthday parties, where the mom’s can enjoy tea while the kids play.

The food at De Volkskombuis is proudly South African and traditional to the Cape. Specialities like ‘Waterblommetjiebredie’ & ‘Meraai’s Chicken Pie are firm favourites on the menu. They have an array of awards for their wine list too.

Our lunch here was a splendid affair. We sat next to the lit fireplace away from the rain and cold outside. I chose the Cape Country Sampler which is a selection of traditional Cape dishes on one plate. The word “sampler” was deceptive. Each of the three portions could easily have filled me. “Bobotie”, Cape Lamb Stew and a portion of Meraai’s Chicken Pie. My partner ordered the Baked Karoo Rib, which literally just fell off the bone. Really delicious and extremely good value for money.
