Spier Wine Estate Overview

Spier, stands on the banks of the Eerste River in the heart of the Stellenbosch wine region. It is a haven for tourists yet it also has a deep set cultural and historical background dating back to 1692 and has the oldest wine cellar in South Africa.

Spier is above all known for its fine modern wines. We had a quick wine tasting experience at the welcome hut, trying three of their wines with an accompanying cheese. For more in depth wine tasting there is the wine tasting centre which is housed in an original Dutch gabled barn featuring over 175 wine estates and lessons in the art are taught in English, Afrikaans and German.

There are two restaurants at Spier Wine Estate. There is the famous moyo and the Spier Deli, located next to the lake for light meals or where guests can purchase cold meats, cheeses and desserts to create your own picnic.

Besides from the food and wine there are numerous other recreational activities for the whole family, including an Equestrian Centre, for both horses and pony rides, a Cheetah Outreach programme and Eagle Encounters where you can view both these beautiful animals. For the younger children there is a dedicated play area and an enclosed play garden.

As you are probably learning Spier is not just a wine producer, they even have their own 155 bedroom hotel, a Spa and Golf Club, which provides the perfect base to fully explore the surrounding Stellenbosch Estates.

Nice, but with a sting in its tail.
Chris Wilkinson from England

Very much enjoyed the wine tasting. We had my grandson with us and so we chose Spier because of the petting animals. But - rip off prices for very little. It wouldn't have been so bad had the raptor section been included in the price. But no, that was a separate charge. Glad we didn't pay it because from what we were able to see of it, it wasn't much. This was just money for everything you wanted to do, including not being able to picnic if you hadn't bought your picnic from them. We made the mistake of buying a dozen bottles of wine to be sent to UK. We bought them on the 25th February and have only just received them after much chasing up. The first box arrived damaged and leaking and we wouldn't take delivery. Then they seemed to forget about us until 3 weeks later when we e-mailed to ask what was happening. Back came an e-mail containing a virus. Not amused and not impressed.
