Every year between the 16th and 18th of August, there is the Haci Bektas Festival which is a celebration of the town of Haci Bektas, the Alevi religion and their founder called Haci Bektas Veli. For many years in Turkey, the Alevi religion had to be practiced in secret however now they openly celebrate with dance, music and the company of friends, family and strangers.
The Haci Bektas festival is the highlight of the Alevi religion and thousands of followers will attend the festival every year. The followers are from many countries including Turkey, Bulgaria and Albania. Emphasis of the religion is on peace and tolerance which makes the festival, a friendly one even to people and strangers who are not of the Alevi religion.
Teams of dancers in colorful costumes perform folk lore dances, and stands will be set up to sell books and souvenirs. You can reach the town of Haci Bektas off the Ankara – Nevsehir highway.
