The town of Avanos in Cappadocia has the benefit of being located close to the Kizilirmak River which gives an abundance of red clay all throughout the year. This has in turn led to an industry that is focused on earthenware pottery and souvenirs. It has also been a center of excellence for pottery makers and every year from the 31st of August to the 1st of September there is the Avanos International Tourism and Handicrafts Festival.
Traditional and modern handicrafts are produced and showcased at this festival which is open to all visitors to the region. The aim is to highlight the industry and put Avanos on the map as a major tourist destination in the Cappadocia region.
