Costa Ballena Information
There are hidden treasures throughout the Costa Ballena region of Costa Rica. Rushing rivers, majestic waterfalls, sun drenched beaches, and jungle covered mountains that drop right into the Pacific Ocean are all found in this natural paradise. Costa Ballena translated to english means "Coast of the Whale" and was named this by locals because of the whales that mate off the coast of Costa Ballena all but 3 months a year.
Among the many jewels of "Costa Ballena", one can find a variety of landscapes, microclimates, hidden paths, brightly colored flora and pristine beaches bathed in sunlight and sea. The forest sanctuaries are home to many plants and animals only found in this part of the world. Foot trails lead through primary and secondary rain forests where there are birds of many colors singing beautiful songs, and where one can find many different species of mammals and insects.
Virgin beaches, beautiful mangroves, towering forests, flowing rivers, cascading waterfalls, mysterious sea caves, sun drenched islands, along with palm and almond tree lined coasts offer many choices for relaxation and adventure to the travelers that visit Costa Ballena. There are several national parks and biological reserves in Costa Ballena filled with incredible wonders of nature. Begin with a refreshing ocean swim in Dominical, the front door to "Costa Ballena". Ride the giant waves or soak in a natural tidal pool that are found in the area. Continue down the coast and you will find miles of beautiful beaches stretching from Dominicalito to Playa Hermosa.
View migrating whales and dolphins, and sometimes sea turtles, that take refuge in Ballena Marine National Park just past Uvita. At low tides, you can walk out to the peninsula that forms a natural whale’s tail on the ocean floor, this remarkable land feature is known as the "Whales Tail" or "Cola de Ballena". Experience water sports such as surfing, diving, snorkeling, kayaking, rafting, or sportfishing in the rich waters of the Pacific. The mangrove channels on the Terraba and Sierpe Rivers offer calmer waters where one can kayak and observe birds, several species of monkeys, reptiles, and the many plants found in this ecosystem. Go to Ojochal, close to the Tortuga beach, you can explore areas on horse back or ATV and find beautiful waterfalls, or enjoy some of the best restaurants in Costa Rica that are found in Ojochal.
