Waterfall El Pavon - Costa Ballena
Costarica
The waterfall known as El Pavon is a gem concealed in the jungle just south of Ojochal. Costa Ballena is full of striking waterfalls, but El Pavon is a local favorite and an absolute must see for travelers touring the area. The waterfall itself is about 10 meters high but the height of the fall is not what makes El Pavon unique. The large rock that rests in the middle of the fall is perfectly situated as if it were placed by a giant or some alien life form. The pool at the foot of this spectacular scene varies in size and depth depending on local rainfall and river flow, but even with a low flow, it is roughly 10 meters by 10 meters in size and 6 feet deep in places. Downriver there is natural waterside and small pool that is great for kids of any age. Look towards the sky and you will see a towering tropical rain forest canopy boasting a wide variety of green leaves. All in all, this is a great place for a family adventure, a romantic date, or to relax by yourself.
To reach El Pavon, continue south on the Costanera past Ojochal about 10 minutes and watch for a green sign that says 'Bar and Restaurant Tilapia El Pavon.' Take a left on the ordinarily well groomed dirt road and drive until you arrive at the restaurant. The waterfall is located across the street so if you pass it you have gone too far. The hike to the falls is roughly 100 meters down a jungle trail that is mostly flat. All of a sudden the canopy and jungle pull back and a beautiful pool and waterfall emerge. Enjoy your time at El Pavon waterfall.
