Pavones is widely known as one of the best surf destinations in the world. The wave is arguably the best in Costa Rica, but no one can claim that it is not the longest. The waves can be so perfect, that they seem to be machine made as they rise out of the Gulf de Dulce and break just off the beach for nearly a mile. The waves wind around the small village and into a picturesque bay where local fishermen pull their boats up on the beach and sell the day's catch. When the waves are up, people from all over Costa Rica and the world come face to face with the massive walls of water that pass by the sleepy town. When the surf is small, Pavones is an ideal place for beginners to learn the sport of surfing. When there is no swell in the water the Golfo Dulce becomes a playground for stand up paddleboarding, snorkeling, scuba, fishing and whale watching.
Pavones is located just 45 minutes north of the Panama border and about 2.5 hours from another great surf town, Dominical. The roads leading to Turkey Town are still not paved but are usually in decent shape and always passable. The town of Pavones has most of the amenities one needs, but bring cash as there is no ATM in town. There isn't a gas station in Pavones either so fill up before you arrive. Gas can be purchased for $6.25 a gallon (Jan. 2014) at the local grocery store that has all sorts of items that would usually be seen in hardware stores, and pharmacies.
Hotels and restaurants dot the shoreline and offer accommodations and tasty meals to fit any budget.
