In the Deira area of the city you'll find Dubai Creek, a saltwater lagoon that separates the old Dubai from the new. Not only is this a spectacular area where natural beauty meets clean-cut modernism, a visit to Dubai Creek also gives insight into the history of the city and its place in the Arabian Gulf.
Dubai Creek represents a significant era of Dubai's history; it established the city as a dominant shipping port. Although trading activity has somewhat diminished since its heyday in the 1970s, recent development in Dubai Creek has seen it become a business hub and sleek modern landscape; with remarkable buildings such as the Deira Twin Towers, Dubai Creek Tower and the National Bank being constructed by the water.
Dubai Creek is an excellent place to visit while in Dubai - there are plenty of things to do and see. You can take an abra (water taxi) across the creek, from either side - on the Bur Dubai side go for a stroll along the paved promenade and take in glorious views over the water. You can also arrange a longer sunset cruise in a traditional 'dhow' - a very romantic experience for couples, and takes in several of the city's historic landmarks.
The Deira side of the creek also offers fascinating distractions - simply by wandering alongside the water you'll come across hundreds of dhows being unloaded, having come across the Gulf bearing goods. Another spot to visit is the Ras al Khor bird sanctuary at the inland end of the creek; this is home to over 27,000 birds including the native flamingo.
