![]() Roma Revolving Restaurant OverviewIf you're looking for fine cuisine and an ever-changing view, you can have it all at the Roma Revolving Restaurant in Durban. Situated on the 32nd floor of John Ross House and the only one of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere, Roma Revolving Restaurant offers a panorama of the city and the Durban Yacht harbour. As you pick your way through the exquisite menu, you can feast your eyes on the scintillating skyline of Durban at night.
The Roma Revolving Restaurant was opened in 1973 by Bartolomeo Ribero, Cosimo Turi and Gino Leopardi and is still under the successful management of two of its original owners, Cosimo Turi and Gino Leopardi along with his brother Tony Leopardi. You can therefore count on the best possible service and fine dining.
Aside from the traditional Italian specialities such as Antipasti, Pastas, Carpaccio and Insalata di Frutta di Mare to name but a few, Roma Revolving Restaurant prides itself on its fresh game dishes and shellfish like Langoustines (which are exclusive to South Africa) Crayfish, Queen and King Prawns. Those loyal to Italian cuisine will not be disappointed. On the menu are the mandatory Veal Piccata, Tagliatelle Alfredo, Ossobuco and the exceptional Spaghetti Vongole made with baby clams netted off the east coast of Africa, plus unexpected extras like Chicken Livers Peri Peri, Fillet Chasseur, Crayfish Bisque and Chicken Cordon Bleu.
The adventurous might be tempted to sample the Crocodile Steak - a cut from the tail delicately grilled and then infused in a copper pan with a sauce of port, cognac, rosemary, fresh sage, onions, and double thick cream - or perhaps the slow-cooked Wild Rabbit in succulent port sauce.
Lost for choice? Well, there's more. Roma Revolving Restaurant also offers three special good-value menus (meat, fish or lasagne) each of which consists of a starter, a main course, an assortment of desserts and coffee. In addition, they have 9 set menus.
Consider this, Roma Revolving Restaurant is 36th of its kind in the world and has the rare feature of a revolving window and floor area.

November 2009 Room with a view / Roma with a view
Felix
On exiting the elevator I thought I had walked into a scene from a 1970's movie - the drapes, the bar area, the black tied waiters and staff - whoa a Bloody Mary was the order of the day, served perfectly at the little cocktail bar. On being seated in the restaurant the view is all around you - and for the next hour the restaurant revolves a full 360 - so the harbour, beachfront hotel's through to the new stadium, all come into view. The FOOD - well back to the 70s again with some classics - Chateaubriand cooked perfectly at the table by the head waiter. A classic, extensive menu, with many party groups enjoying birthdays, anniversaries etc, and also a lot of cosy couples too. A definite institution in Durban

October 2009 Dont miss the Roma...
Italian hospitality at it's best, a romantic setting with the best view in town. I find the personal service and recommendations from the owner himself, adds class to the evening.. Keep some space for the best sweets trolley ever. Thanks a lot, I'll be back.
