El Salvador

The smallest country in Central America, El Salvador is also the most densely populated in the region. Its capital of San Salvador draws many visitors with its nightlife, and the Pacific beaches are another big temptation for travellers.

With turbulent times cast aside for the country, El Salvador is keen to welcome visitors, and even exhibits its recent woes as museum fodder for visitors. The Museum of the Revolution, located in Perquín and staffed by members of the FMLN, a guerrilla group cum political party in El Salvador.

Tours of the El Salvador countryside can be great fun too, as the country is home to mountains with volcanic activity, as well as sites like Joya de Cerén, where an entire Mayan village has been preserved under ash from nearby eruptions.

  • Food in El Salvador is similar to other neighbouring countries, but with its own flair. Thick tortillas called pupusas wrap up Quesillo cheese with loroco flower buds, fried pork rinds (chicharrón) and refried beans, and yucca frita, or deep fried cassava root vegetable, makes the perfect side.
  • El Salvador commemorates its history and heritage with several large festivals over the year. The El Salvador del Mundo festival lasts a week in August, and Easter celebrations also spread out over several days.
  • Seasons show little change in temperature in El Salvador, though precipitation will vary greatly. Hurricanes and tropical depressions can also afflict the country upon occasion.
