Guatemala Overview

Guatemala

The history of Guatemala spans thousands of years, and you can still explore the artefacts of ancient civilisations when visiting. In addition, Guatemala hosts a wide range of indigenous species unique to Central America, making for a great outdoor experience on holiday.

One of the largest preserves of ancient Mayan culture, the remains of Tikal, can be found northern Guatemala, and you'll have the chance to explore the towering temples and avenues of a former trading stronghold of the empire. Quiriguá is another UNESCO World Heritage Site preserving Mayan ruins in Guatemala, and includes many impressive sculptures, the largest of their kind in pre-Columbian America.

However, the natural wonders of Guatemala are widespread as well and you could even (carefully) scale one of Guatemala's many active volcanoes. Guatemala is also home to the Maya Biosphere Reserve, the second largest preserve in Central America, where spider monkeys, ocelots and jaguar still roam.
