Nicaragua Overview

Nicaragua

A colourful and diverse country on the Central American isthmus, Nicaragua has a rich culture encompassing its native population and Spanish and other European influences. Nicaragua is also the largest country in Central America, with many different geographic regions for visitors to explore.

With a primarily Mestizo population - who have both Native American and European ancestors - Nicaragua's culture stems from pre-Columbian tribes and Spanish settlers. This influence can be seen in traditional Mestizaje costumes and dances. Merengue and Salsa are two music and dance styles that still draw crowds in Nicaragua, and the colourful dress of many dancers complements the rhythm and soul of the music.

As with neighbouring countries, Nicaragua has a diverse geographic landscape, which leads to a rich diversity of plant and animal life. Ecotourism has become popular in northern Nicaragua, with visitors choosing to visit the Mosquito Coast and Bosawás Biosphere Reserve, where they can view rare birds such as eagles and macaws.

Information for your travels in Nicaragua

If you're planning a holiday in Nicaragua, keep the following information in mind:

  • Weather in Nicaragua ranges from warm to ... hot. A typical tropical climate, Nicaragua has a dry and rainy season, and can face the threat of hurricanes and other tropical storms upon occasion.
  • Impressive monuments abound in Managua, Nicaragua's capital and largest city, including the French-inspired Old St James Cathedral or the remains of the Plaza de la Revolución in Managua's city centre, which was partially destroyed in a 1972 earthquake.
  • Nicaragua has made much progress in securing its streets and is considered a generally safe destination. When heading out of the cities, however, you'll still need to watch for the beasties.
