Uruguay Travel Information

Uruguay Overview

Uruguay

Uruguay may be one of the smallest countries in South America, but with its lively social scene, gorgeous beaches and enviable position on the South Atlantic coast, you'll enjoy a markedly different experience here than in the higher or more densely forested areas of the continent.

Uruguay was seldom visited until the crash of the peso made travel a lot more affordable, but even now you won't find it overrun by budget-seeking tourists. Uruguay has been a holiday favourite longer than many other countries in South America, and its chilled-out beaches, bustling markets and colonial cities are not going away any time soon.

Just because Uruguay is well developed, you can still enjoy a taste of adventure when heading to the Northern Interior. Visit river towns such as Tacuarembó to step into 'gaucho country,' where Uruguay's traditional history and culture is well preserved all around.

Travel information for Uruguay

Travelling to Uruguay may have become easier of late, but you should still research essential information before booking your flights:

  • Nationals of many countries can enter Uruguay without a visa, but you should still check entry requirements before you travel, or when crossing the border from Brazil or Argentina.
  • Spanish is the official language of Uruguay, so you might want to brush up on key phrases before your visit.
  • Try the local cuisine for an authentic flavour of Uruguay. One local delicacy is gramajo - potatoes, eggs and ham - while meat lovers may also wish to try chivito, a tasty platter sandwich.

From Montevideo to Artigas, we're looking for local experts to give their unique perspective on the best places to go and things to see in Uruguay. If that sounds like you, don't hesitate to contact us.
