Adegas Castro Brey
Galicia
Adegas Castrobrey is a very different winery that belongs to D.O. Rías Baixas. It is a family winery, nowadays run by the third generation. It was founded in 1983 and is situated in Camanzo (Vila de Cruces),20 kms. from Santiago de Compostela, in the interior of Galicia.
The stocks are planted in such a way that the damp is avoided, to help the air and the ripening process. A careful treatment of the vines through traditional methods are made (pruning, natural tying with reeds). The natural fertilizer is used again as well as the rest of the stems and the grape skins after the orujo distillation and the weeds present after the forest cleaning.
The harvest is made by hand, making a previous selection before removing the stems. The grape is always processed in the following 8 hours after being picked.
The 12 ha of vineyards are situated in a 'thermal valley', on the Ulla riverbanks. The soul is basically derived from granitic substrates with a smooth Atlantic climate. They are situated some 100 m. above the sea level, although located in a mountain area. It is the real 'granitic vine-growing', where the climatic conditions for the albariño grape vines are excellent.
The winery philosophy is a clear commitment for quality, based on the combination of artisan production, and the most advanced techniques of controlled fermentation in stainless steel and thanks to a great human team: From the vineyards where our grandmother Isabel Pereiro together with Manuel and Manolo, take care and work in our vines; Moncho and Jose in the winery, taking care of every detail in the wine process with the advice of our enologist Marcos Lojo, as well as the final results that are shown. Everything is overseen by the managing director, Lourdes Castro and, following the final step of our wines from the winery delivery business manager Ramon Blanco, and Ana Amosa, responsible for export sales together with Maite, coordinator in our offices. Every effort means an important work in which everybody is putting just their efforts to this project of more than 25 years.
In the final step, a late bottling is made, keeping the wine in stainless steel. With this process, the wine can be enjoyed a long time and all the characteristic blend can be tasted.
As a result, we get wines with a personality of their own, with a very well balanced acidity and unctuous features in the mouth that makes them different to any other D.O. Rías Baixas wines.
SIN PALABRAS (100% Albariño grapes). It is a selection of the oldest stocks from the high area of our lands without top-graft cuttings (14.000 bottles)
SEÑORIO DE CRUCES (100% Albariño grapes). It is made from the blend of albariño grapes from Cambados coast and those from the mountain sub-area of Ulla (30.000 bottles)
SEÑORIO DE REGAS (Albariño, Treixadura, Godello and Torrontés). It is made with our own grapes (6.000 bottles).
Once the winter arrives in the Ulla riverbanks, land of humble wine makers but with a long liquor makers tradition, the bright alembics become the inert grape skins in orujos and liquors that warm up the cold winter mornings. The winery makes three different licquors:
BOCABAJO CASTROBREY ORUJO,
BOCABAJO CASTROBREY HERBS LIQUOR and
BOCABAJO CASTROBREY COFFEE LIQUOR.
