Highways

By road to get to Galicia (Lugo, La Coruna and Santiago de Compostela) from the south or Madrid its best to take the A-6 (Autovia del Noroeste) motorway. From Santander and Bilbao its also best to pick up the A-6 at Leon. To travel to Ourense and Vigo after leaving the A-6 at Benvante its best to travel on the A-52 ( Autovia de las Riajas Baixas) motorway. In Galicia the AP-9 motorway (which also provides access to Portugal) and the N-550 road lead to Vigo, Pontevedra and Santiago de Compostela.

The roads in Galicia are generally good and through continued investment these are set to improve even further in the future. The motorways are excellent so driving throughout Galicia is a real pleasure and although there are tolls at regular intervals these are generally inexpensive. It's recommended that motorists use a satellite navigation device e.g. Tom Tom or up to date road map.
