Languages

Galicians generally speak both castellano (Spanish) and gallego (Galician) which is similar to Portuguese. As there are relatively fewer English speaking visitors in comparison with other parts of Spain, English is not widely spoken here. In the larger cities it is possible to get by with speaking English but it is strongly recommended that a language guide is used for those not conversant in Spanish to aid better communication!  For those keen to learn spanish the BBC's website is a good resource for language learning. But despite any language barriers the Galician’s are incredible patient and willing to converse, if only to improve their English!!

At most tourist offices English is spoken and tourist information is widely available in English and the other principal languages.  Menus at larger restaurants are also in all main European languages. At larger tourist attractions there are usually visual/tourist aids in most languages.
