Hawaii Volcanoes

Kilauea volcano is one of the world’s most active volcanoes, perhaps THE most active volcano in the world and has been continuously erupting since 1983. Located on the southeastern part on the Big Island of Hawaii, Kilauea is part of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, a World Heritage Site since 1987.

Native Hawaiians consider Kilauea the sacred home of Pele, the volcano goddess. Pele is described as "She who shapes the sacred land" and is considered passionate, volatile, and capricious. Even today Pele lays a curse on anyone who removes rock from her volcanic caldera.

Kilauea’s neighbor volcano, Mauna Loa is the largest volcano in the world. Mauna Loa is also a very active volcano with 33 eruptions since 1843. Eruptions are rarely violent, but rather "Hawaiian style" which involves flowing lava eruptions.
