Ibiza Walks

The hills are alive with the scent of pine trees in between beautiful look-out points.

Ibiza nature is a pleasure any time of year so grab your walking shoes, pack a picnic & get ready to explore. The hills are alive with the scent of pine trees in between beautiful look-out points. The coast is lined with long, sandy beaches, cliff-tops and turrets. You will need a good sense of direction but Ibiza is quite small, so getting completely lost is not really an option. Here are a few of our favourite walks, with tips on how to reach them and what to look out for...

Pou Des Lleó

An easy walk on flat ground, suitable for all levels.

Once in the town of San Carlos, follow signs to Pou des Lleó beach. Turn left at the restaurant at the very top and park. From here, follow the path around the bay and up the hill. The terrain then flattens and if you keep right, you will come to some steps leading down to the sea - a lovely place for a quick dip. Further round the corner to the left you will find a very interesting, possibly man-made canal in the sea. Let us know how you think this was made if you do make it here.

Continue along the coast for a peaceful stroll with the Mediterranean Sea to your right and rich, Ibiza soil to your left. The island you can see from here is Tagomago, privately owned with a recently re-opened restaurant on it, surrounded by deep, crystal clear waters. Soon you will come to a villa on your left with strange metal structures within its garden walls and then the choice is yours whether to continue up the hill and across towards the beach of Aguas Blancas, or slowly make your way back.

Cala Llonga

A medium level up-hill walk on a dirt track.

Park at the beach and follow the paved road up the hill, with the bay on your left. continue past the hotels until the road turns into a dirt track which you will follow up the mountain, with beautiful views of the bay all the way up. On a clear day, our neighbouring island Formentera looks so close you could touch it. Picturesque views of the bay of Sol den Serra are straight ahead and you can see the Amante Restaurant from here too. Once at the top you will see the remains of a Fenician archaeological site called Cap des Llibrell at 184m above sea level. Head back down the hill in the direction of Sol den Serra and the path will lead you to the car park right at Amante Beach club - a great place to pop in for a well deserved cocktail after your walk! Or once back in Cala Llonga, visit any one of the lively bars during the summer season or even the Thursday evening market along the promenade.

Es Portitxol

This is a high level walk.

Head towards the town of San Miguel and just before the town on the left, follow signs to Es Portitxol. Park at the very top and begin walking down the paved road towards the sea. At a long wall you will come to a foot path. The descent is very pleasant with picturesque views from high up on the northern cliffs. Upon nearing the water's edge a stretch of sea comes into view that looks like a lake. Boat houses surround the lake and the water here is almost always as flat as a pancake. Lovely place to spend the day jumping in and out of the water and enjoying a picnic. The climb back up is not so fun! Up-hill all the way is hard work so save some water for the trek and maybe even wait for the sun to start setting before you begin. There is a charming countryside bar called Can Sulayetas on the drive back that is the perfect place to stop for a snack or a drink on the way home.

Cala Aubarca

This is a high level walk.

Find the town of San Mateo (Sant Mateu - better known for the yearly wine festival) and with the church to your right, follow the road straight ahead of you. It is a ring-road so if you end up back at the church, you've missed the turning! Stay on the paved road that curves past fields of Ibiza grape vines and keep left. You will reach a house on your right with a dirt track just to the left of it. Follow this track for quite a while until you come to an opening on the cliff top. This is where the walk begins. Take the path and follow it all the way down. You will soon come to a fantastic natural bridge - perfect place for a cheesy tourist photo or two! Stop here for a picnic or continue all the way down to the sea for a dip. Make sure you are rested and ready for the walk back up to the top - it is all up-hill! If you would like to go for a meal while you're out in this area, try the Puerts del Cielo restaurant that over looks the Islas Margaritas just through the neighbouring town of Santa Inés (Sant Agnes).

These walks are wonderful any time of year but keep in mind that a lot of the restaurants mentioned may be closed during the quieter season & swimming is up to the individual during the winter months.
