![]() Galata Tower OverviewThe Galata Tower is one of Istanbul’s most iconic landmarks, and is one of the oldest towers in the world.
First constructed from wood in the year 507 AD by the Byzantine Emperor Anastasius, it was rebuilt from stone in 1348 by Genoese and was at the centre of a fort surrounding the Galata citadel.
When Istanbul fell to Ottoman rule in the 15th century, the Tower began to be used as a dungeon and later as a strategic point to spot fires in the city.
In 1832 the Galata Tower was damaged by fire and restored and in 1967 it underwent further restoration to convert it into the tourist-friendly monument of today.
The Galata Tower, with its nine stories and conical roof, stands at almost 70 metres tall. There are two elevators inside the Tower taking visitors to the top where you can enjoy a great view of the city.
It now houses a café and restaurant on its upper floors offering traditional Ottoman and European cuisine (fixed and a-la-carte menu) and Turkish entertainment, complete with 360º views over the city and water.
Nearby the Galata Tower is the lively Tunel-Asmalimescit area which is packed with restaurants, bars and boutiques.
Practical InformationOpening hours: The Galata Tower is open from 9am – 8pm each day, while the restaurant stays open until midnight. Tickets: 10 TL per person. Main picture: ©Yildirim Incealemdaroglu |

July 2011 Galata Tower

I found also to much to pay to see just the view from the tower. Also the place up is to small and being so many people there you can'r take pictures to well.I just return few days from Istanbul and i must say is a nice city just to expensive(i mean the tickets for visiting). For exemple at Dolmabahce Palace i stay on the line 2h and half .I pay 15TL(just for palace) and when i was inside the guide told me i can take pictures just in the court and not in the palace.I don't know why because anyway inside is not to much to see.Well just the big hall is down near the harem ....yes that is a great hall and very nice painted but nothing to be hide or people to not get pictures.I couldn't understand why they made this restriction.

September 2010 A pricey view!

it seems a bit much to pay 10 lira to enjoy the privilege of going up the Galata Tower. Nevertheless, it's an important piece of Istanbul history and the view is truly spectacular.
