Prettily perched on the edge of the Marmara Sea in all its fairy-tale splendour, Haydarpasa Railway Station must surely be one of the more scenic transport hubs in the world. Gifted to Ottoman Sultan Abdülhamid II by his German ally Kaiser Wilhelm II in the early part of the 20th century, the Station has provided a crucial link between Turkey and the rest of the Middle East for over a century.

The imposing Neo-Renaissance style building resembles a German castle and is surrounded on three sides by water. The railway station was constructed between 1906 and 1908 by a predominately German team.

Some ferries from Eminonu and Karakoy stop by here on their way to Kadikoy, making a ferry-train connection easy; be sure to check before departing that it does stop at Haydarpasa, otherwise it’s a 10 minute walk from the Kadikoy docks.

The main suburban train line ('banliyo treni') departs from here to destinations in Anatolian Istanbul such as Suadiye (Bagdat Street) and Caddebostan Beach. Trains also travel south andgolden-horn-informationeast, to destinations within Turkey and internationally to Iran and Syria.

The Station’s facilities include a ticket sales office, waiting lounge, small shops, left luggage and locker facilities and the Gar Lokantasi Restaurant, which serves traditional Turkish food.

The Florence Nightingale Museum at Selimiye Military Barracks is a short walk from Haydarpasa Station.

Practical Information:

Tickets for Turkish trains can only be bought in person at the station. Bring your passport with you to make bookings for international trains.
