How to get to Pafuri Wilderness Camp
To / from:
Phalaborwa airport ±5hrs
Timbavati camps ±5.5 hrs
Johannesburg airport ±6.5-7 hrs
Nelspruit ±6 hrs
From Punda Maria Gate allow at least 1hour 30 minutes travelling time to get to Pafuri Camp. From
Pafuri Gate allow for at least 45 minutes travelling time to get to the camp. Therefore guests arriving
with a transfer (such as from Phalaborwa airport or by road from Mashatu) or as self-drive with their
own vehicle must arrive through the Punda Maria Gate by no later than 16h30 in order to get to Pafuri
Camp by no later than 18h00 as this is when the Park roads close (17h30 in May, Jun and Jul) and
no-one is allowed to be driving on the roads to and from the gates after that. If the transfer company
still needs to get their vehicle/driver out at Punda Maria Gate prior to the 18h00 gate closure, then
they must arrive no later than 15h00. For the same reason, guests departing by road transfer or self
drive may not leave Pafuri Camp prior to 06h00 (05h30 in Jan, Feb, Mar and Oct, Nov, Dec) as this is
when the Kruger roads/gates open.

Pafuri Wilderness Camp Overview

Pafuri Camp lies on a gentle bend along the northern bank of the Luvuvhu River, under the shade of enormous ebony and nyala berry trees, in the northernmost sector of the Kruger National Park. This part of the Kruger is known for its incredible scenery and biodiversity. Activities revolve around game drives, walks and birding trips and guests can also visit the traditional Makuleke Village to learn more about the people whose partnership with Pafuri Camp and eco-tourism has allowed this beautiful wilderness area to thrive.

Look and feel

* The camp is divided into two areas: Pafuri East with 7 tents and Pafuri West with 13 Meru-style tents, all en-suite with both indoor and outdoor showers

* 6 of these are family tents accommodating a family of 4 each

* Tents are raised on platforms to catch the breeze and connected via elevated walkways so that wildlife can move undisturbed to and from the river

* The main deck, swimming pool, dining and lounge areas are open to the river view, and a lower-level terrace is perfect for watching the sunrise

* Colourful fabrics and stonework reflect the culture of Makuleke people

* For a more private experience, parties and families can book sole use of Pafuri East, which includes its own dining area and small pool

Pafuri Camp is located in the 24 000ha Makuleke Concession – the largest private concession in the Kruger Park, between the Limpopo and Luvuvhu rivers. This is one of the most scenic areas in the Kruger, its legendary biodiversity (75% of all species found in Kruger recorded here) featuring nearly 400 bird species and over 100 mammal species. The Limpopo and Luvuvhu rivers host the highest density of nyala in Kruger and species such as eland, Sharpe's grysbok and yellow-spotted rock dassie, which are difficult to find further south in the Park, are regularly seen here.

The Pafuri region is famous for the large herds of elephant and buffalo that are resident most of the year round, while general game includes impala, greater kudu, chacma baboon, waterbuck, warthog and perhaps grey duiker or bushbuck. On the easternmost boundary at “Crooks’ Corner” the Luvuvhu supports a large population of hippo and crocodile. Predators include lion, leopard and occasional sightings of wild dog. Recently, and excitingly, species such as wildebeest and white rhino have been relocated to the area, from which they have been locally extinct for almost a century.

This is a birder’s Mecca with some species found nowhere else in South Africa and a high level of endemism. Some species are found nowhere else in South Africa and the serious birder will revel in being able to find Böhm's and Mottled spinetails, racket-tailed roller, three-banded courser and southern hyliota. Other specials are black-throated wattle-eye, Pel's fishing-owl, yellow white-eye, Meve's starling and tropical boubou.
