![]() Camp Shawu OverviewCamp Shawu offers unparalleled experiences during your visit to Kruger National Park. Guests can easily access this safari camp by air or road. Flights arrive via O.R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg (about five and one-half hours away by road) to the more remote Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport. The camp is located within the famous Kruger National Park among 15,000 hectares of natural terrain. This facility does not accommodate children under the age of 12 years. Camp Shawu is a four-star establishment. The camp is named after its most famous resident, an African elephant “Shawu bull” that roamed these lands for 60 years. Shawu the bull elephant had the longest tusks recorded in the history of South Africa, and those who saw him while he was alive say he commanded respect. Camp Shawu Accommodation: Elegant accommodations are in store when you stay at Camp Shawu. Five luxurious rooms with twin beds have décor that is reminiscent of the Colonial period. Each room contains a ceiling fan, a fireplace, and mosquito netting around your bed. An ensuite bathroom is provided and an outdoor shower, as well as a private patio. From your accommodation, guests are able to enjoy the splendid scenery of the Mpanamana Dam and the African bush. Camp Shawu Facilities: The camp has a restaurant and bar. Enjoy morning tea and coffee with muffins before a big game day trek. A delicious lunch will be served either in the dining area or you can take your lunch back to enjoy on your own private deck. Camp Shawu Location: Morning and late afternoon game drives offer guests the opportunity to spot a lion, elephant, leopard, cheetah, or rhino in their wild and natural environment. It is an exciting experience! With the abundance of trees and water in the area, a great number of diverse birdlife can be found here as well. Relax on your patio and, using your binoculars, try to identify as many birds as you can find. Avid birdwatchers will want to keep a journal.
Camp Shawu has genuine “Buffalo Dung Walls” that many say capture the true essence and spirit of the “real Africa,” the wild Africa. Here you can find yourself for a short stay or visit and be privy to the natural wonderment of the area. The African bush has a special quality and offers a kind of magical existence that, when once incurred, can provide a spirit and energy that will remain with you long after you leave this beautiful land.
