Burnside Bistro

Set upon a charming terrace of a renovated house in the suburbs of Craighall Park, Burnside's cafe offers a welcome relief from shopping malls and pavement cafés. Tables dressed in white linen overlook a fountain and lawns in keeping to their philosophy of a home away from home. Chef and food stylist Jessica du Plessis studied at Prue Leith Chefs Academy and offers delicious breakfast and lunch items from Tuesday to Sunday, with dinner on Thursday and Friday. The food style at Burnside is very relaxed, focusing on fresh, quality ingredients and great flavours with homemade items in the daily bakes, freshly squeezed juices, croissants and muesli.

The menu is solid but small offering amazing breakfasts and lunches both healthy and mouth-watering. Breakfasts are a big hit with beautifully presented dishes like poached eggs with sweet cherry tomatoes and mushrooms, topped with emmenthal shavings and fresh rocket, served in a bowl rather than a regular plate. Also early in the day devouring crumpets with bacon, syrup and berries, or French toast is popular. Lunch favourites include a substantial shaved fillet sandwich with hand-cut chips, creative pot pies, roast chicken with artichoke and parmesan salad, and Thai style ginger fishcakes. To finish off delicious desserts are on offer including classic crème brûlée, mini mascarpone berry pavlovas or lemon merinque pie.

Burnside's exhibits a Gallery which is a lovely spacious area and a great place where patrons can quietly look at a variety of art. The art ranges from well-known local artist such as Hannes du Plessis to international art works. Serious collectors as well as casual buyers have been assisted by artist Hannes du Plessis with their choices and placing of art. Although Hannes is not on the premises all the time he is readily available for advice and suggestions

It's a leisurely venue where one should take their time eating the delectable food while enjoying the surroundings.
