Tswaing Meteorite Crater
Johannesburg
Some 220 000 years ago a blazing stony meteorite the size of half a football field slammed into the earth's crust. The impact formed a huge crater, 1.4 km in diameter and 200 m deep. This crater is one of the best-preserved meteorite impact craters in the world. Major attractions, besides the crater, are an extensive wetland system, the large variety of plant species of the Sourish-Mixed Bushveld, and 240 species of birds.
Programmes: Interactive hands-on education programmes are presented to all grades, integrating natural sciences, history, geography, life skills and arts and culture. Guided tours to the crater and identification courses are presented. The entrance fees are given on their website.
Bring a hat and a bottle of water with you as, although the walk to the bottom of the crater is not very long, it is quite steep down to the lake. On the way back you walk in the open where the sun can be very hot in summer.
