Maropeng Visitor Centre
Johannesburg
One of Gauteng's favourite heritage attractions, the award-winning Maropeng Visitor Centre has welcomed more than a million visitors since it opened in 2005.
The world-class exhibition in the Cradle of Humankind, takes visitors on an interactive and educational journey through human evolution over the past few million years, and adults and children alike enjoy the underground boat ride through the different stages of the Earth's creation. The exhibition features fun installations that teach visitors about pre-historic animals that inhabited Earth before they became extinct, as well as bipedalism, the ability humans have to walk on two legs.
The Maropeng Visitor Centre is open seven days a week from 09h00 to 17h00. The last boat ride departs at 16h00.
While you are planning your visit to the Maropeng Visitor Centre, why not make a weekend of it? Stay at the marvellous Maropeng Boutique Hotel, and then the next day take a short drive to the Sterkfontein Caves to see where many of the fossils were found.
