Malaria advice

Malaria is one of the most serious tropical diseases and it can be fatal if not diagnosed and treated at an early stage. However, as stated by the Organization Roll Back Malaria, this disease is a preventable and treatable infectious disease. In South Africa, Malaria is found in Mpumalanga Province, Limpopo Province, and the north eastern areas of KwaZulu-Natal Province, as far south as the Tugela River. Malaria is present in certain of the South African National Parks which lie within the above provinces - please read the SAN Parks own recommendations regarding Malaria, before entering either the Kruger or the Mapungubwe Parks.

Measures to avoid mosquito bites:

Wear long-sleeved clothing, long trousers and socks when going outside at night, apply an insect repellent containing DEET (e.g. Tabard, Peaceful Sleep) to exposed skin at night, spray inside with an insecticide spray (e.g. Doom), after closing windows and doors. Carefully follow the Directions for Use and Warnings and Precautions

Take preventative medicines:

Take only the medicines recommended by a health professional. Start with the medication before entering the malaria risk area. Take the medicine only as prescribed by your doctor, and continue while in the malaria area and for the prescribed number of weeks after leaving the area.
