Johannesburg Zoo

Johannesburg

Zoos

Johannesburg Zoo is a popular visitor's attraction in Parkview, an attractive leafy northern suburb in The "Parks Suburbs". The zoo is internationally accredited and highly respected for its animal husbandry practices, that includes maintaining a high standards of animal welfare, nutrition and ethical conduct, and also ensuring the physical and psychological well-being of all its animals.

The zoo was opened in 1904, when a large piece of land was donated to the citizens of Johannesburg as a recreational venue. Along with the land came a small collection of 10 animals and today this has grown to 365 species (1868 animals), consisting of seven classes of animal life: mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, insects and arachnids.

The zoo's animal collection includes charismatic White and Tawny Lion, Cheetah, Puma, Polar Bear, Brown Bear, Ring-tailed Lemur and Forest Cobra, to name but a few. You will also be able to see also the Spectacled Bears, Snow Leopard and Striped Hyaena, which are rare in zoos. The Zoo strives for the protection of endangered species and houses several of such species, these include: Siberian Tiger, Wild dog, Lowland Gorilla, Sumatran Orangutan, Red Panda, Black and white Ruffed Lemur, Wattled Crane, and Cape Vulture.

In addition to an exciting array of animals from other parts of the world, there is a large collection of South African animals such as African Hippo, Giraffe, Zebra, Baboons, Meerkat, Honey Badger, Springbok, four of the big five - Buffalo, Rhino, Elephant and Lions - and many majestic birds such as Secretary Birds and the Bald Ibis. In the walk- through aviary, visitors can experience free flying birds at very close range.

Visitors can also enjoy a peaceful walk and picnic in the lush gardens of the zoo, surrounded by the most amazing flowers and trees. One can enjoy the freshness of open spaces and floral aromas while being amongst animals from all over the world. The zoo's plant collection consists of beautifully maintained public gardens: indigenous & historical gardens such as medicinal garden, herb gardens and rose garden and landscaped plants in animal exhibits, which aim to recreate their natural habitat of the animals.

Animal talks take place every weekend and public holiday from 10h30 to 15h00, where Zoo keepers narrate personal stories of zoo animals, how the animals live, their relationships, origins and social norms.

Day Tours are also offered to visitors., but it is not as well known that Night Tours, which allow visitors to see the zoo's nocturnal life, are also available. The Tour guide explains the nocturnal animals' natural behaviour as the group sees it happen. If you are lucky, you could see active Honey Badgers, Owls, Tigers, Lions, Hippos, Civets, Caracals, Porcupines, Genets, African Wild Cats, Red Pandas, and Serval, etc. Visitors should bring a picnic meal, torches and wear comfortable shoes
