Despite the close proximity to the Far East, Almaty is not a pleasure centre for seekers of Chinese, Korean or Japanese cuisine for this reason.

Instead, the influx of international restaurants owes more to the outward and open mindedness of Almaty's people, and their love of good food means that anybody opening up in town has to do the job well. Some of the best such eateries in the entire region are regularly packed out by diners in the southern Kazakh capital, and most return either for sushi or many of its regional compatriots, dishes far too numerous to list here.
