![]() Island Camp OverviewGetting to Island Camp is an adventure in itself – you travel by motorized canoe across Lake Baringo, cutting through the crocodile and hippo infested water, until you reach the tiny island Camp. The camp is perfectly positioned with amazing, panoramic views all around. You are met with a thirst quenching drink, and then clamber up the steep steps (your luggage following behind) until you reach your luxury tent and an amazing view all around the lake. After a few days of being surrounded by water, it’s hard not to let go of the stresses and strains of urban living and with any luck, the process of unwinding and relaxing will begin! Island Camp Rooms: Although the 23 tents with their pretty thatched roofs and verandas, might not be quite as big or grand as some of the other luxury camps, they’re still very comfortable and nicely furnished all the same. Most tents face east in order to catch the beautiful sunrises across the lake.
All tents are ensuite and are separated by green lawns or rockery gardens to create a feeling of space and privacy. Tents are available as twin, double or triples (for families). There is a honeymoon suite which is bigger and a little more grand than the other tents. Island Camp Restaurants & Bars: Food at the camp is delicious and well presented, and if you can believe it, the head chef has been at the camp for 28 years! The dining room has a nice outlook with good views all around or if you prefer, room service in your tent is available free of charge. Light lunches of salads, cold cuts & Pasta dishes are offered in the heat of the day, with a 5 course dinner menu being offered in the evening with a choice of Main courses. Twice a week, a barbeque dinner is served under the stars at the Poolside and on Sundays, a delicious traditional curry is served for lunch. For something a little more special, a champagne Breakfast can be arranged on a secluded rocky beach at the far end of the Island are offered after a scenic boat excursion around the lake (with supplement). There is a pool bar, which serves fabulous cocktails and is open all day Island Camp Facilities: A boat trip to visit the marshes is always fun with plenty to see; including flocks of stunning birds, crocodiles slipping into the water effortlessly and fish eagles swooping gracefully to catch a fish in their talons.
If you feel like a little more adventure, a whole host of watersports are available, including waterskiing, windsurfing and kayaking. Take note though; although watersports at the camp are a popular activity for many guests, the lake has quite a number of crocodiles and contrary to popular belief, they DO venture away from the edges of the lake!
The swimming pool at Island Camp is at the highest point of the island giving it spectacular views all around. The island is a birders paradise, and sharing breakfast time with the incredible variety of dazzling tropical birds who congregate to collect toast crumbs is lovely. For a peaceful or exciting holiday in stunning surroundings, Island Camp is an excellent choice.

AREA INFORMATION : LAKE BARINGO Found in North West of Kenya and having over 400 species of birdlife in this area, Lake Baringo is understandably a popular destination for birdwatchers. With its hot, dry climate, this freshwater lake and its surrounding area attract local fishermen who paddle their dug out canoes on the lake making a picturesque sight. Crocodiles and hippos lie, camouflaged, half submerged in the murky water. Fish eagles swoop, dive and call with their eerie scream, and surrounding the lake are mountain ranges which make a truly beautiful sight, and depending on the time of day, dramatic lighting can affect the whole panorama to create awe-inspiring effects; perfect for photography.
Most people who visit Baringo, like to also visit neighboring Lake Bogori which is smaller but interesting in its own right.
