Governors Camp Overview

The Governors’ Camps in Masai Mara are located on the banks of the Mara River, and during colonial rule, were reserved only for Kenya’s governors. In addition to the main Governors’ Camp, guests can stay at the Little Governors’ Camp, the Il Moran Camp, or the Governors’ Private Camp. The Little Governors’ Camp is smaller, and is accessed by a boat ride across the Mara River. This camp is situated at a watering hole, and is often visited by warthogs and sometimes elephants! The 10-tent premiere romantic Il Moran camp is located along the Mara River, and guests here enjoy complimentary game drives and walks, as well as wine with dinner. The Governors’ Private Camp can only be booked by one group at a time, for a completely private safari experience. The camp manager plays host to the group, which must consist of at least four people, staying for at least three nights. All of the camps are located in the Masai Mara Reserve, in which the Great Wildebeest Migration occurs from July to October. Guests arrive from Nairobi or other Kenyan locations at the Musiara Airstrip, where a representative of the camp will greet them. (Luggage is restricted due to the aircraft’s size.) Drinks and the park entrance fee are not included in the rates. The camps are a member of Classic Safari Camps of Africa.

Governors Camp Rooms:

The Governors’ Camp includes 37 recently renovated luxury canvas tents with views of the river or the plains. Guests can watch the scenery from private verandahs. All of the tents have en-suite bathrooms with flush toilets, bidets, showers, and hot and cold water. There are 24 tents furnished as twins, 12 double tents, and one suite. Accommodations at the Little Governors’ Camp are found in 17 recently renovated luxury tents with en-suite bathrooms (with showers, flush toilets and bidets) and large wooden decks and verandahs. The tents have wood floors. There is a special tent for honeymooners. The Il Moran camp has ten large luxury tents, with king-sized beds and Victorian bath tubs in wood-paneled bathrooms that also have showers, twin sinks and a flush toilet. These tents also have private verandahs. The Governors’ Private Camp can accommodate up to 16 people in eight tents, located on newly constructed wood platforms with private verandahs. The tents have handmade furniture and private bathrooms with flush toilets and “hot bucket showers”. Tents at all of the camps are lit by gas and paraffin lamps, although there is electricity at the reception desks.

Governors Camp Restaurants & Bars:

Meals at the Governors’ Camp are served in an open tent with views of the river and plains. There is an open bar. Breakfast and lunch at the Little Governors’ Camp are served outdoors, and dinner is served in the Dining Tent. There is also a small bar. At the Governors’ Il Moran Camp, guests dine outdoors or in the open dining tent. Room service is available upon request, and guests are awakened with tea or coffee. Meals can be served in the bush for an additional charge. Guests at the Governors’ Private Camp are served meals on china and crystal, and can work with the executive chef to design a menu. All drinks except champagne are included with these meals at no additional charge.

Governors Camp Facilities:

Guests in the camps can choose from guided walking or driving safaris, or safaris from hot air balloons (followed by a bush breakfast and champagne). Guided trips can also focus on photography and/or bird watching. All of the guides are experienced and well-trained. Day trips to Lake Victoria via a small plane can be arranged for an additional charge, and guests can also visit local Masai homesteads and schools. There is a spa and a curio shop. Daily laundry service is included in the room rate. The camp has a telephone, fax and e-mail service, and has a satellite telephone. Other camps can be contacted by radio.

Fantastic Game viewing
Samanatha Bishop from Dorset, England

This was the first time we had been to Kenya and the highlight of our trip was staying at Governors Camp in the Masai Mara. It was everything we could have wanted. The Masai Mara was unbeliveablely beautiful and exciting to see the animals so close up. Everything about our experience was first rate, from the food, the game drives in open sided off road vehicles, to the luxurious tented camps. It really was a great experience.
